  • Build it and they will come

We are building a home. We need the space. We have a family of 6 in a 1953 north central Phoenix home in about 1500 square feet.  Not complaining, but it’s tight at times. Especially when I led Brownies in my front living room with 18 squirly girls for 7 years. We have utilized every square inch.

So we slightly overcompensated.  We are building a house only 2 miles away.  Tall ceilings and large rooms.  As it nears completion, it really has become a labor of love.  When I hear the phrase from Field of Dreams – “Build it and they will come” – I automatically think of our future guests.  That is what I am most excited about.  Having the space to comfortably fit more than my own family and being able to entertain.

As a dreamer, there were certain things that I really wanted when we decided to build the house.  First, a dutch door.  I have this perfect dream in my head where I am serving lemonade and cookies through a dutch door.  Idealistic?  Maybe.  But I am getting my dutch door just in case.  And it will be red.  Yes, red.

Second, is a window seat and bookshelves for Emily.  Emily is a voracious reader and a dreamer like me and I wanted a place that she could sit and enjoy those things that was all her own.  I should say her’s and Samantha’s since they will be sharing a room.  I am completely over the top excited for this.  And so is Emily.

I love the color red.  And the whole family is crazy for the Arizona Wildcats.  So naturally, we had to have a red room.  This is going to be a really great game room.  I almost start singing the fight song when I walk into this room.  Bear Down Arizona…

I am so excited about sleepovers, family fun nights, Halloween, brunches, barbeques, and neighborhood block parties.  We are still 2-3 months from moving in.  If you know us, you know there have been many bumps in the road.  Perhaps potholes would be a better description.  But once we are in we will forget about the bumps and potholes and have everyone over to celebrate.

After being raised as an Air Force brat, home was what my family made of each house. Now, even though we are building new walls, my prayer is that “home” remains what the 6 of us make of it.  A big item being checked off my list.  So very thankful today.

We are building, so please come…
