  • Writing Your Life List – Part III

Hello sweet friends. Another Monday has rolled around, so it’s time for Part III of my Writing Your Life List Series. I’ve been awed and amazed at some of your lists. I love some of the ideas I’ve seen in your emails and links to your blogs. The energy you pour into this will reap huge benefits.

If you are new to this series, welcome!

    Let’s review quickly…

In Week #1, we focused on writing our values, excitables, and our influencers. These help shape who you are and should be reflected in your life list. Read more about week #1 here.

In Week #2, we started looking at our goods (values) and greats (dreams). Again, I think it’s imperative to keep this simple, so you really have a list that reflects you. You have only one life so make sure you are doing things that you want to do or achieve. I highly encourage you to read more about week #2 here, if you haven’t.

Now onto Week #3. I write a lot. I doodle a lot. I make lists a lot. I believe I was able to write over 1300+ things that I want to do because of making many lists. It really enabled me to see what was important to me and what was not.

Using various writing prompts and making categories will help to spark your imagination. They will help you to see what it is that you truly want on your list.

Writing Life List Items Using Writing Prompts

Here are 10 writing prompts to help get you started on writing your list:

    1. List 10 childhood memories

    2. List 10 places you want to travel because of pictures you’ve seen in magazines, TV, or on the internet.

    3. List 10 things you would do if given a second chance.

    4. List 10 things that make you smile.

    5. List your favorite things to do on the weekends or your day off.

    6. If you could go 5 places and money were no object, where would you go?

    7. List 10 new professions you would like to try. (don’t limit yourself.. remember money and/or talent isn’t what is important here).

    8. List at least 5 things you would like to change about the world.

    9. List 10 things you would do if you won millions of dollars in the lottery.

    10. List 10 things you want to be remembered for at your funeral.

Here are 3 examples of items on my life list that I came up with as a result of writing these lists.

Life List Item: Host a father/daughter cake baking contest

Writing Prompt: List your top 10 childhood memories

Why this item: My dad entered the church’s cake bake contest when I was in first grade. He made a pineapple upside down cake, which isn’t the prettiest of cakes. My dad won the prize for ugliest cake and I cried the whole day, knowing he was devastated. He was obviously ok.

Life List Item: Go on a 5 day white river rafting trip

Writing Prompt: List 10 things you would do if given a second chance

Why this item: I love the water. I love the pictures that I see of groups camping out and rafting for an extended period. Jeff and I went rafting in Costa Rica and it was possibly the most fun I had in 6 hours. But now, I want it to be longer.

Life List Item: Visit Greece with my my parents and grandparents

Writing Prompt:  If you could go 5 places and money were no object, where would you go?

Why this item: My parents met in High School in Athens, Greece when both of my grandfathers were stationed at the military base there (that no longer exists). My mom has never been back. I would love to take my family and hear their stories firsthand of their time in Greece.

Are you struggling with one of the prompts? If so, keep these in mind.

    1. Remember to look at your worksheet from Week #1, where you look at the things that excite you and inspire you. What books, blogs, projects, magazines do you read? Why?

    2. Go to your local library or grocery store magazine aisle. What seems to pull you in?

    3. Check out my pinterest page. Pinterest is an amazing site to spark your imagination and see what excites you. Do you have 300 pins of travel destinations? If so, make sure travel is reflected in your list.

    Again, there are no rules.

When you are writing your list, keep this quote in mind…

We are all born originals. Why is it so many of us die copies? -Edward Young

So it’s time to pick up your pencils (or keyboard) and write. Using these writing prompts above, come up with at least one life list item from each prompt. So at the end of this exercise you should have a minimum of 10 life list items.

You might just surprise yourself and have over 100 items. There is no rush. There are no rules that says your list can’t change. But I know that it is important to just start.

Please share in the comments your 10 life list items or a link to your blog post/page that contains your life list. Let’s encourage one another to live life.

Also, when you complete an item off your life list, take a picture, jot the details of your item and send it to me. I would like to share some of these accomplishments on my facebook page. I really want to celebrate these with you and with each other.

Now get to work people! :)

    Blessings sweet friends – Jenny

It can be overwhelming. I try to remember to break it down for others as I had 7 months of countless nights of sleep to think about it and change it as needed. I still add to it!
Hope this helps you out. Just remember to make it your own.

Looking forward to making my list. Going to Greece will also be on my list as we have the same DNA! ;)

Oh, I was meaning to tell you… we aren’t related. You were from the milk man. But, I’ll still take you to Greece when I win the lottery. (My chances would improve if I played, however.)

I wrote a life list a couple of months ago after I had a health scare and read the book: “Creating your best life” The ultimate life list guide by caroline adams miller and michael b frisch. I can really recommend it… I still reread it or parts of it at times. From your list I have one item on my life list that is from 4 of your prompts. I would love to visit all state parks of texas… every time we have some time off I look at my map (pinned on a cork board with pins at every park I visited already) and then tell my husband which direction to drive. We have seen quite a bit of the state and get in shape since we hike a lot. Also it helps with another life list item.. I want to take 1000 animal portraits. It remembers me of my childhood when we would always go hike on vacations, We love to be in nature when we are off and I love to take photographs. I really need to go revisit my list and see if I can add some more things with your prompts! Love these blog posts! Thanks!

Yvonne – I love these items. How original! State parks and animal portraits… I’m in awe. I called Jeff and had to share. This is exactly what I’m talking about – having list items that reflect who YOU are. I’m so excited for you and your journey.
Thank you for the book recommendation. I will most definitely check it out.
Thank you so much for sharing. I’m so inspired, Yvonne.

Please let me know if you complete any of your items and send me an email/picture.
It would delight me so. Thanks again Chrisy for taking the time to comment and reading my story. Blessings- J

How do you give yourself permission to dream big? How do you let go of the “that’s silly” ideas? I so appreciate your sense of open possibilities. Thanks for being so inspirational!!

Jenny – those are such amazing questions. And bottom line is you have to constantly tell that inner voice, “No! Stop doubting. I’m worth those big things.” I call my inner critic, Jane.
Jane can be my worst enemy. She creates more damage and havoc than any friend, family member, or stranger.

I think about the people who have made history. And all of them were scared at one time or another (or many times). But they finally realized their dreams were bigger (or more important) than their fears.

I became terrified of my dreams for years before and after cancer and it wasn’t until April when I had my wake up call. I am so passionate about this because I want people to learn from my mistakes of waiting. There is no need to wait on setting your course towards achieving your goals and dreams. Thanks Jenny – J

Thanks so much for the great and inspirational response. I started my list yesterday. I only have 16 so far, but with your words of encouragement, I am sure there will be more soon! Thanks for changing this mom’s simple life. :)
