  • 39 List – Take the Kids to See Wicked

Jeff and I had the amazing opportunity to see Wicked at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. last summer. Aside from our dancing video and reuniting with my high school friends, a highlight of the trip was seeing this Broadway show. We weren’t planning on seeing the musical, but we went to a Washington National’s baseball game and Dee Roscioli sang the national anthem and it was the most beautiful rendition I ever heard. The announcer mentioned that she was starring as Elphaba in the Broadway musical, Wicked. I gave Jeff that look and he knew we were going to have to see the musical if there was any possibility.

Jeff and I got back to the hotel room, we ordered tickets for the following night, and had one of the best nights of our life. We even got to meet Dee after the show.

When we left the show, I was moved to tears. Music is so powerful. I told Jeff on the plane back to Phoenix, that if Wicked comes to town, we MUST take the kids.

So several months later we drove by a billboard for Wicked and Jeff looked at me and smiled. So for Valentine’s Day, Jeff went to the Gammage Theater box office to buy tickets. He told the ticket salesperson that he wanted us to have decent tickets, so that the kids would be able to see it. He told Jeff the options, but Jeff wasn’t happy with the options or the price. Then Jeff explained that this was a gift and an item on my life list. The salesperson kept searching and then asked Jeff, “Do you mind going in the middle of the week with the kids?” Jeff said we could go any night. Jeff ended up scoring great seats for the SAME price as the tickets in the back of the theatre. He said, “These tickets weren’t here just a second ago,” and scratched his head. Magic I tell you, magic.

Moods had been dampened over the past week, with losing the house, my car being hit in a parking lot, and Hank our dog has been missing for a couple of days. They say bad things come in three’s and I have to tend to agree with that this week. So this night was a welcomed relief.

We left Sam with a baby sitter and made a full night of it. We dressed up, ate Italian food at Oregano’s, and embarrassed the kids with taking pictures in front of people by the movie sign. I had to take extra pictures because the sun had gone down (and I don’t have a flash on my camera), and those extra pictures caused teenager anxiety for Rebecca. The pictures were poor quality but I’m still glad I have them.

We got into the theater and I than began to realize how good of seats Jeff got. By great seats, I mean front row. We were so close that Emily had to get boosters to see over the orchestra wall. After seeing the faces, feeling the power of their voices, seeing the details in the elaborate costumes, well I don’t think I could ever imagine being far away. I have a confession, I possibly might be a seat snob now. That’s not a good thing, considering we can’t afford to be front row ticket snobs. Yikes.

Wicked was awe inspiring and my best word to describe the music was palpable. I could feel the lyrics, the emotions, and the amazing power of their voices. At the Kennedy Center, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) had the most powerful voice, but last night Glinda(the Good witch) had the best voice and was wicked funny.

I loved looking over at the kids and seeing them with mouths on the ground, giggling, or smiling. Before we could ask the kids what they thought, Emily was shouting during the standing ovation for the performers, “Can we come back and see this tomorrow night?”

Rebecca’s review was summed up in her Facebook post of “BEST.PLAY.EVER.” And Ben loved the twist at the end (but I won’t be a spoiler).

So another item marked off my 39 list – my journey to complete 39 things before I turn 39 next November. Working on several other items right now, so it’s going to be a fun filled March.

    Blessings sweet friends – Jenny

Edit: Hank was found a couple of hours after this was posted. We are reunited and it feels so good! {cue music in the background}.

I can’t encourage you enough Dana. It was truly a magical night. I left the auditorium really wanting to hear more and kind of ached when we drove off. It was that powerful.
I’m kind of surprised by how it moved me so much. The lyrics of the songs were written so well.
I bet Chicago would be a great place to see Wicked. Let me know if you go and what you think Dana! -J

I remember taking Lilykate to see Beauty and the Beast right before she turned three at Gamage and it was the most magical event… she dressed up as Belle…. we were about three rows back and she had to use a booster to see…. it made me a seat snob too!!! I felt like I was part of the performance!!! And Lilykate squealed with delight throughout the entire performance!!! Good memories…. so glad you all had the opportunity to experience it and cross it off your list!!! Musicals make the heart happy like nothing else!!!

It was the best musical that I’ve ever seen. And I was a big fan of Miss Saigon and Les Miserables, but I think I enjoyed this the best. And that’s saying a lot, considering how much I enjoyed the other shows.
I remember those beautiful pictures of your Beauty and the Beast show – possibly my favorite.
Try to get tickets if you can before it ends. You and Matt would love it so. – J

I am so glad that you all had such a great time. I love musicals and I’m waiting for Cats to come to town again so I can see it.
I’m so sorry about your bad run of luck. Hope you find Hank. Sending happy thoughts your way.

I’ve never seen Cats or Phantom of the Opera, but I would love to see both of those classics. What a treat that will be!
Our run of bad luck seems to have changed as we found Hank this morning, a couple of hours after this was posted.
So I’m sure he’ll be up to his old antics of chewing shoes and being a full fledged pistol. But we are so glad he’s home.
      Thanks Nicol- Jenny

Love, LOve. LOVE this play. When I need a pick me up a play Defying Gravity….makes me cry and happy at the same time.

I’m totally a seat snob…can’t help it. Once I was spoiled I’ll never go back to the second level..haha

I completely agree Julie. I can’t stop singing Defying Gravity and Popular. Glinda last night was amazing and beyond funny singing Popular. I was tickled.
And I think I would rather just see 1 or 2 plays a year with really good seats than 3 or 4 in mediocre seats. It truly does make a difference. I hope Jeff can work more to pay for this new habit. :) Yikes. – Jenny

Shelby and I have tickets to see it when it is in Dayton in June. I can hardly wait because I have never seen it but have heard nothing but great things.
Also, I am so glad Hank has been found!

It’s so good. I’m excited for you both to see it. With your love of dance and music, you will love it even more.
I’m still laughing at your email and the Price is Right story – I shared it with Jeff last night at dinner. Hoping to make it your direction. Miss you terribly.- J

I am going to see Wicked tonight with a gang of girlfriends. I am so glad you were able to get such good seats!!! Such a good show! I always get goosebumps and teary when they perform Defying Gravity. I would love to see Les Miserable, Phantom or Beauty and the Beast. The best musical I saw besides Wicked was Lion King. I love Julie Taymor.

I’ve seen Les Miserable and it was fabulous but my seats were horrible. I just said to Jeff that I’m sure Les Mis would be even more incredible close up.
Have fun with your girlfriends. It won’t disappoint. Defying Gravity was great, but Glinda was so superb and her version of Popular was not only vocally fantastic, but it was hilarious. She is a very funny actress! – J

Okay, okay, now I’m convinced. I have longed to take Isabel to a play, but just wasn’t sure if she would really like it enough to justify the cost. We have a great theater (the Aronoff) in Cincinnati…I’m going to look at their schedule of upcoming plays now. I have always wanted to see Wicked and Lion King.

So glad you were able to enjoy a great night with your family…this above all heals us.

Oh, I’m so glad this seals it for you. I told Emily on the way home that I had a surprise for her {Hank}, and she asked, “Is the surprise tickets to another play?”
So I definitely say it’s worth it. And the laughter at dinner + planning of our trip was part of the fun, too. Hope you can get to a play/musical soon – J

Have to agree re: Wicked. The best. We got to see on Broadway with Kristin Chenowith. Loved it better than Billy Elliot which was on our “list”.
So as you map out your big trip, feel free to stop in CT if you need a pit stop.

I would love to see Billy Elliot. It came to town but we knew we were going to spend some money for 5 of us to go see Wicked, so we opted to wait until another time.
I’ve never been to Connecticut, but from pictures it just looks gorgeous. Thanks for the offer Katie- would love to meet all my new friends along the way. – Jenny

I am quite anxious to see Wicked. Thinking about going to Gammage two hours prior to try to win lottery for orchestra seats.

So glad Hank is back. That made me cry.
