Summer Planning

So Jeff and I are starting to get excited. We have never been camping together as a family, and now we have decided to hit the road together for 2.5 months in a small confined place. Have I mentioned that we are a loud family?

Some of our friends and family are excited for us and others think we are crazy. And quite frankly, we vacillate between being ecstatic and being terrified. Yet neither Jeff or I have ever suggested throwing in the towel. And after 12 years of marriage, we agree that we have a lot of love, a spirit of adventure, and a whole lot of crazy that has helped us through other transitions and will help us through this one.

So Jeff and I know that we have the following things to plan out and do in the next 8 weeks:

39 List – Our Blue Lily Family Photo Shoot

Our first ever photo shoot… big sigh. I’m in love. I love the lighting, the colors, and these kids. I really love these kids. I’m so thankful that Wendy and Tyler of Blue Lily Photography captured our family just how I see us… full of life, smily, colorful, loud, and loving. I wrote about our experience with Blue Lily here, but let me tell you once more.

Our photo shoot was effortless. Jeff and I loved Wendy and Tyler. I left the photoshoot totally inspired. Wendy and Tyler sold their house and all of their possessions, and are traveling the world with their 2 gorgeous children while taking pictures and video. Yes, please.

So since this is our first photo shoot, I am refusing to apologize for overloading you with photos. Hopefully I don’t make your computer irritable.

39 List – Take Piano Lessons

So I’ve gone back to school. Music school to be precise. My teacher Carolyn has been teaching for over 60 years. She is the energizer bunny and a wonderful teacher. I get to practice on both her baby grand piano and her digital piano, which are both works of art.

I’ve had 4 lessons and I’m almost done with my first book. I come from a very musical family and I was the ugly duckling. My parents and sister were in the choir and my Meem and my aunt were concert pianists. So when Carolyn told me she had never had such a great new adult piano player, I blushed.

Life List – Take Kids to Feed Giraffes

The kids got an early release today from school and I decided to take advantage of it and the absolutely gorgeous weather, here in Phoenix, Arizona. It was windy and a little cooler than usual, but that means I was wearing my favorite jeans and a jersey sweatshirt. This is code for Happy Jenny.

Sam and I read an animal book every night and she always talks about wanting to feed the “Raffies”. I did some research and then remembered the Wildlife World Zoo. It’s about 40 minutes from my home and I had been once before with Emily’s Kindergarten class field trip. I was very pregnant with Sam, so I didn’t climb the tower to feed the giraffes.

It was amazing how close we got to the giraffes. The giraffes loved being fed and would let you touch their leathery tongues, but gently moved if you tried to touch their faces. They are truly magnificent animals. And on a side note, I loved how their house/enclosure had a tall, skinny “doggie door” cut out for them. The kids really got a kick out of that.

39 List – Take the Kids to See Wicked

Jeff and I had the amazing opportunity to see Wicked at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. last summer. Aside from our dancing video and reuniting with my high school friends, a highlight of the trip was seeing this Broadway show. We weren’t planning on seeing the musical, but we went to a Washington National’s baseball game and Dee Roscioli sang the national anthem and it was the most beautiful rendition I ever heard. The announcer mentioned that she was starring as Elphaba in the Broadway musical, Wicked. I gave Jeff that look and he knew we were going to have to see the musical if there was any possibility.

Jeff and I got back to the hotel room, we ordered tickets for the following night, and had one of the best nights of our life. We even got to meet Dee after the show.

When we left the show, I was moved to tears. Music is so powerful. I told Jeff on the plane back to Phoenix, that if Wicked comes to town, we MUST take the kids.

So several months later we drove by a billboard for Wicked and Jeff looked at me and smiled. So for Valentine’s Day, Jeff went to the Gammage Theater box office to buy tickets. He told the ticket salesperson that he wanted us to have decent tickets, so that the kids would be able to see it. He told Jeff the options, but Jeff wasn’t happy with the options or the price. Then Jeff explained that this was a gift and an item on my life list. The salesperson kept searching and then asked Jeff, “Do you mind going in the middle of the week with the kids?” Jeff said we could go any night. Jeff ended up scoring great seats for the SAME price as the tickets in the back of the theatre. He said, “These tickets weren’t here just a second ago,” and scratched his head. Magic I tell you, magic.

Moods had been dampened over the past week, with losing the house, my car being hit in a parking lot, and Hank our dog has been missing for a couple of days. They say bad things come in three’s and I have to tend to agree with that this week. So this night was a welcomed relief.

Loving the bigger picture

When I started this blog, I had lost a part of my identity. I was consumed with full time work and being Jeff’s wife. I was referred to as Rebecca’s mom for almost 2 years by one lady at our school, before I finally said, “You can call me Jenny.” I’m sure every wife and mom can relate to this at some point in their journey. I had to sit down and remind myself what I liked and what excited me that wasn’t related to Jeff or the kids.

But in my planning for 2012, I went to the opposite extreme of planning without taking into consideration what the dreams of the other 5 people in my family wanted. Don’t get me wrong, most of my items include them, but looking back I don’t know if I really asked them.

I’m thrilled to be Jeff’s wife and a mom to Rebecca, Ben, Emily, and Samantha. I want to see my dreams come true, but I also want to encourage Jeff and the kids to chase their dreams as well. I want to make sure they see that I seek to find that balance between holding onto my self identity and my cherished roles as their wife and mom.

In making my life list, we have started talking a lot more about dreams in our house. And this weekend at their big 3 day swim meet, we have been talking about our dreams. When we started sharing, I found myself a tad shell shocked. I learned so much in just getting Jeff and the kids to tell me 5 life list items. Just 5.

I found out that Jeff misses golf and regrets not trying to pursue professional golf longer. I learned that Rebecca wants to meet Foster the People. I had no clue who this group was, let alone that she liked them enough for them to be #1 on her life list. Emily wants to learn how to play lacrosse, Ben wants to go whale watching in Hawaii, and to no surprise, Miss Samantha wants to go see Mickey Mouse again.

Here are their lists…

Jeff’s Back! Let’s Create a Kick-$#@ Life List…Together!

This is Jeff, hijacking Jenny’s blog again. I have been reading various comments, tweets, and emails from readers about not being ready to start a life list or not knowing how to start. Jenny is at work today so I decided to step in.

Today, we are going to create a kick-$#@ life list together.

In the comments, list ONE thing that you want to do before you die.

Could be big, could be small. Just put it down in writing and let’s encourage and inspire each other with ideas that we may never have even thought of including.

Jenny and I discussed the life list idea with Becca, Ben and Emily last night so I will start with mine and theirs in the first comment. Please pass this on and participate. I know that some of these could make it on to Jenny’s life list.

Thanks and have a great day!

-Jeff

Writing Your Life List – Part IV {Just Start}

This week is the final installment of my writing your life list series. If you are new to this series you will want to go back and read the first 3 parts:

Part I – Discover what makes you tick & finding your identity (what you value, what excites you, and what influences you) – read here

Part II – Determine your goods (goals) & greats (dreams) – read here

Part III – Writing your life list using 10 writing prompts to get you started – read here

If you participated in Parts I-III, you should have at least 10 items on your life list. And now comes the hard part…. start. That’s right, just start. The key to starting is very simple. You must plan and then have the guts to just take action.

What do you have to lose? You already know you are worthy of your dreams. No matter what you have done, you are worthy. You don’t have to wait for anything… the perfect marriage, body, finances, etc. You will never get to that point, so again, just start.

Speaking My Dream Out Loud

Right now I’m a little nauseous. I haven’t even watched this video. I listened to it, but I just couldn’t watch it. Jeff did all the editing.

Dreams are wonderful and make me feel alive. But dreams are also scary and can leave me feeling vulnerable. But I did it. I just emailed Ellen my submission to dance with her on her show.

And if I get the chance to meet her, I will tell her the rest of my dream. Here is my video. And I ask that you please share it and spread the word. For me, it’s about helping one another accomplish our wildest dreams and living life. And I look forward to returning the favor to you as well one day.

Today, I am blessed to be alive. I am not sure why I survived cancer and others haven’t. I’m surely not more worthy or blessed than them. Of that, I am certain. But because I was spared, I feel like I have an obligation to live life with my best efforts. And in this case, I will dance like a crazy, happy person on Ellen’s show if given the chance. Even if it somewhat scares the heck out of me.

I owe this video to you. All of you. I now know that I would never have accomplished many of these items on my life list if it wasn’t for your encouraging emails and messages.

Thank you. I must go throw up now.

Blessings sweet friends – Jenny

Writing Your Life List – Part III

Hello sweet friends. Another Monday has rolled around, so it’s time for Part III of my Writing Your Life List Series. I’ve been awed and amazed at some of your lists. I love some of the ideas I’ve seen in your emails and links to your blogs. The energy you pour into this will reap huge benefits.

If you are new to this series, welcome!

Let’s review quickly…

In Week #1, we focused on writing our values, excitables, and our influencers. These help shape who you are and should be reflected in your life list. Read more about week #1 here.

In Week #2, we started looking at our goods (values) and greats (dreams). Again, I think it’s imperative to keep this simple, so you really have a list that reflects you. You have only one life so make sure you are doing things that you want to do or achieve. I highly encourage you to read more about week #2 here, if you haven’t.

Now onto Week #3. I write a lot. I doodle a lot. I make lists a lot. I believe I was able to write over 1300+ things that I want to do because of making many lists. It really enabled me to see what was important to me and what was not.

Using various writing prompts and making categories will help to spark your imagination. They will help you to see what it is that you truly want on your list.

Writing Life List Items Using Writing Prompts

Here are 10 writing prompts to help get you started on writing your list:

1. List 10 childhood memories

2. List 10 places you want to travel because of pictures you’ve seen in magazines, TV, or on the internet.

3. List 10 things you would do if given a second chance.

4. List 10 things that make you smile.

5. List your favorite things to do on the weekends or your day off.

6. If you could go 5 places and money were no object, where would you go?

7. List 10 new professions you would like to try. (don’t limit yourself.. remember money and/or talent isn’t what is important here).

8. List at least 5 things you would like to change about the world.

9. List 10 things you would do if you won millions of dollars in the lottery.

10. List 10 things you want to be remembered for at your funeral.
